Beim Konsekutivdolmetschen hört der Dolmetscher zunächst die Aussage in der Ausgangssprache und dolmetscht diese anschließend in die Zielsprache. Sollten umfangreiche Abschnitte gedolmetscht werden, dann hat man mit klassischem Konsekutivdolmetschen zu tun. Diese Abschnitte können mehrere Minuten dauern. Auf diese Weise werden Diskussionsbeiträge oder Tischreden verdolmetscht. Bei Verhandlungen oder Gesprächen sitzen die Verhandlungspartner an einem Tisch und führen eine rege Unterhaltung. In diesem Fall spricht man vom Verhandlungsdolmetschen als Unterform des Konsekutivdolmetschens.

For this type of interpreting, the interpreter first listens to what is being said in the source language and then reproduces the content in the target language after the speaker has finished. In case of classic consecutive interpreting, longer pieces of a speech are being translated, i.e., that the speaker may carry on for several minutes before the interpreter translates. This way, debates or toasts are being translated. During negotiations or meetings, the different parties sit around a table and have lively discussions. In this case, one talks about liaison interpreting as a subtype of consecutive interpreting.

Jeśli tłumaczone mają być obszerne wypowiedzi, to mamy do czynienia z klasycznym tłumaczeniem konsekutywnym. Mogą one trwać kilka minut. Dyskusje lub wystąpienia są tłumaczone w ten sposób.
